AN INTIMATE VIEW

OF MASCULINITY

Four black-and-white images of hands and arms in various positions.

My name is Rudolf Cuchkin, and I am a self-taught visual artist.

I draw men. Not to define them,
but to get a sense of what they’re going through.

I depict a sensitive, sensual, and sexual man.
It’s a way of using him as a lens to understand something about myself,
but also what we might have in common.

Desire is there, not as a subject,
but as a way of seeing, of feeling.

I’m not trying to represent an ideal.
I’m interested in what’s there, at a given moment:
a body, a gaze, a presence.

I sometimes fragment bodies and faces.
Not to reduce them,
but to draw the eye, to emphasize a detail,
to make it more present.

My compositions are minimalist, often set against a white background.
The subject appears alone, in a direct, face-to-face encounter.

Each image remains open.
It leaves room for whatever each person projects onto it.

What I draw is not just the other person.
It’s also a way to explore what flows between us:
desire, projections, sensations.

My work evolves like a shifting landscape.
Nothing is set in stone.
An image can be interpreted on multiple levels.
